Luke Egan took up surfing at the age of seven and quickly found his feet as a member of the Merewether Boardriders.
Thanks to several family trips to Indonesia, Egan developed the style that would one day result in him joining the sport’s upper echelon.
His breakthrough came in 1988 when he qualified for the final of the Billabong Pro. Still a teenager, he was already regarded as one of the best on the North Shore.
Egan quickly became a consistent top 20 performer and in 1996 the goofy-footer took the next step. That year he finished fourth on the world tour and his stock soared.
In 1997 he won his first event – the Quicksilver G-Land Pro. The following year he won his second world tour event, Tavarua's Cloudbreak, and trailed home only American Sunny Garcia in the race for the world title.
Egan continues to match the world’s best and remains one of the sport's elite.
